Mom Bliss Interview with Patricia Matti of Island Basics

It’s another Mom Bliss Interview! Here, I feature awesome readers of this blog, who are motivated moms from around the globe! From business owners to bloggers, this feature is meant to inspire you to create your own bliss, a life that works for you. Today’s Mom Bliss guest is Patricia Matti, the eco-minded mompreneur behind the Island Basics brand of all-natural bath, body and home care products.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your life as a mother.

I don’t know where to begin because I’m a mother, wife, daughter, employee, and entrepreneur and so much more. It gets crazy running a household while being employed and having a business at the same time. I always wish that there are more hours to a day. But no matter how hectic my days get, I am perfectly happy with how things are right now. And when I think about how I am as a mother, I realize that I’ve turned into my own mother! And that is a great thing!

Please tell us the story behind your business.

As with any first time mom, I only wanted to use products that were all natural. I was looking for a chest rub but those I found were imported and were quite expensive. That’s when my husband and I decided to come up with our own product. The business is really a joint effort between my husband and I. We both take care of product development and marketing and during bazaars you will see the two of us selling. I handle most of the finance, administrative and logistics side of the business, while my husband does all the designs for the labels and he’s the delivery boy as well as cargador.

What kind of moms or women would benefit from your business?

Moms will appreciate the fact that all our products are tested on our own household and on other family members and friends. Every single item that we carry is the same product we use on ourselves and in our home.

We love to know how other moms manage their busy days! Tell us: What is a typical day is like for you as a mother and business owner?

Mornings are a flurry of activity at home because I have to wake my daughter before 6am and get her ready for school. Get myself ready for work, and in between, check on all our baon, things to bring to work/school, orders to send out, etc. I have a day job so when I get home, I cook then check my daughter’s homework and we study for any quizzes. I make sure that bedtime with my daughter is strictly for her. We read books, pray and talk about anything and everything. When she’s nicely tucked in bed and in dreamland, I prepare orders again or stick labels on our products and catch up with the husband’s day. Usually, I’m in bed by 11 with a good book. No matter how hectic and stressful a day is, I always read, even just a few pages of any book before sleeping.

It also certainly helps to delegate and ticking things off from my never ending lists makes me happy.

What advice would you give to a new mom entrepreneur, based on your own experiences?

Even if the business is “home-based” or small, it always pays to practice good business etiquette and ethics.

  1. [...] Patricia is in charge of Island Basics’ product development and marketing, which means that each product has a “mom-approved” seal. This is awesome, especially since I look to other moms for recommendations and endorsements for safe products for my family. (You can read more about Patricia and her mompreneur experience in her Mom Bliss interview.) [...]
